Chyron and Cell Journalist Team Up to Integrate User-Generated Content Into News Graphics

New Partnership Uses Open Standard MOS Redirection to Move Assets Across Platforms

Melville, NY – Chyron today announced that it has integrated the company’s CAMIO graphics asset management server with the Web-based Cell Journalist application to streamline the incorporation of user-generated video content into a news rundown. This integration enables producers to locate Cell Journalist content through the Associated Press ENPS interface and quickly move it to the CAMIO server for playout to air. With this capability, broadcasters can maximize the value of user-generated content — such as media captured and uploaded by a field journalist or just a person off the street — which proves particularly useful during live breaking news and severe weather coverage.

“In the past, an integration of this sophistication would have been costly both in terms of development time and money,” said Jim Martinolich, vice president of integration technology at Chyron. “Now, however, we have been able to leverage MOS Redirection, part of the open-standard MOS communications protocol, to simplify the sharing of content among systems. In doing so, we make it easy for producers to access unique or timely user-generated content through the same ENPS interface they use to create their news stories. This is a simple solution with a huge benefit — namely, a more relevant and visually rich news product, without added workflow complexity.”

Cell Journalist is a comprehensive platform that allows users of mobile devices to upload, view, and share images and videos with a news station in seconds. Through the integration of Chyron’s CAMIO and Cell Journalist, a producer working in ENPS can locate uploaded stills and video hosted by Cell Journalist and then simply drag and drop them into a Chyron template and into the newsroom rundown.

“Chyron and AP ENPS share our vision of breaking down silos and making content available to the entire newsroom. This integration will help stations win the big story by providing real time access to content submitted by audience and staff alike,” said Parker Polidor, president of Cell Journalist.

“This is an excellent example of how MOS and Open Standards can be used to build a completely transparent bridge from a cloud media source to a local production channel,” said Mike Palmer, director of design and integration strategy for AP ENPS. “Chyron and Cell Journalist have remarkably simplified the journalist’s job by hiding the complex operations normally required to manually download, transcode, and copy media from one source to another. This ultimately makes the journalist significantly faster, more competitive, and more efficient.”

Companies Collaborate to Raise the Profile of Jamaica’s Red Stripe Premier League Broadcasts

MELVILLE, N.Y. May 23, 2012 — Chyron today announced that its Creative Services division has teamed up with Phase 3 Productions — a TV, film, and multimedia production company based in Kingston, Jamaica — in overhauling TV broadcasts for the country’s Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL). Chyron Creative Services helped Phase 3 to identify the graphics, data, and functionality needed to give its coverage the high production value typical of the world’s most prominent soccer leagues and teams. Additionally, the team designed and built the requisite graphics and optimized its integration with the database that supports information-rich graphics playout via Phase 3’s LEX2 graphics system.

“Because many football fans in Jamaica watch broadcasts from high-profile leagues such as the Barclay’s Premier League, they have come to expect a very high standard of production,” said Delano Forbes, director at Phase 3 Productions. “One of the most important elements of sports coverage is the presentation of numbers, and graphics and statistics are the main way in which that information is presented. Through our work with the Chyron Creative Services team, we’ve dramatically improved this element within our RSPL broadcasts. In addition, Red Stripe, a subsidiary of global giant Diageo, felt that the Chyron partnership brought added value to the televised productions.”

With Red Stripe’s sponsorship, Phase 3 is able to introduce regular Monday night football matches enhanced with the addition of new camera angles, replay capability, theme music, and audio effects; a much greater depth of stats and information; and the full branding and graphics package designed in conjunction with Chyron’s Creative Services team.

As an existing Chyron customer, Phase 3 already works within the Lyric graphics creation environment. With the aid of Chyron Creative Services, the company was able to design the graphics workflow to take full advantage of the Lyric software and the LEX2 on-air graphics playout system.

“With its work on RSPL coverage, Phase 3 is raising the bar for how sports in Jamaica are covered,” said Bonnie Barclay, chief marketing officer at Chyron. “Never before have viewers seen local sports televised on this scale or with such a dynamic, professional look and feel. It’s a really remarkable advance that gives viewers a better experience while improving the visibility and popularity of the league’s sponsors, teams, and players.”

The first full RSPL season with the new look and feel will begin in September.

Lyric Design Tip

21 05 2012

When designing a new graphics package, try to use one standard image size for replaceable image elements. This allows the artists to make one image that can be utilized in multiple types of graphics.

For instance, a headshot image can be used in a full screen, over-the-shoulder, or monitor graphic just by altering the scale and position of the image on your Lyric templates. This will streamline your workflow and make it possible for images to be shared among shows and producers, eliminating the need to order multiple images for use in different types of graphics.

Remember that you can download Lyric PRO 8.1 today and have access to full touchscreen graphics in time for elections.  Plus, you can now put graphic’s control directly into your anchor’s hands with ShotBox for Lyric, our new iPad App for Lyric PRO 8 and 8.1.
